Why Choose RSB

Demonstrate your commitment to a sustainable bio-based and circular economy with RSB certification.

It is also recognised by regulatory authorities in the EU and Japan – allowing preferential market access to RSB certified biomaterials.

What Can Be Certified

Certification to the RSB Standard covers fuel, biomass and material products from bio-based and recycled carbon, including fossil waste.

Helping operators meet the requirements of multiple standards through joint audits

Collaboration with Other Standards

The RSB can work with other credible sustainability standards, such as other ISEAL Alliance members, to promote sustainability in the bioenergy and bio-products markets. These are multi-stakeholder standards that include a clear balance between the voices of industry and civil society and that aim to make a genuine positive impact on the environment and communities.

RSB can recognise other voluntary certification schemes, making audits simpler. A joint certification can allow other voluntary schemes to access diverse global markets and allows biomaterial certified by other schemes to enter an RSB-certified supply chain.

Before recognising another certification scheme, the RSB conducts an in-depth review to identify equivalencies and gaps between the RSB and the other standard. It also identifies any additional requirements to be met by an operator already certified under the other scheme, in order for them to become RSB certified. Guidance and checklists are then developed for certification bodies to carry out ‘top-up’, or joint audits.

RSB & US Corn Stover Protocol

The RSB worked with partners in the USA to develop a protocol to assist auditors and producers in assessing the volumes of corn stover that can be removed from fields without having a detrimental impact on the ecosystem. Stakeholders involved in the development of the protocol included the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), NRCS Soil Science Division, the USDA Agricultural Research Service as well as US-based industrial and NGO participants.
