Thanks to the abundance of feedstocks, particularly crop biomass, South America is seen as an important region for scaling up the production of sustainable aviation fuels. However, it is critical to ensure that biomass is grown in a sustainable manner, taking into account the need to protect natural environments and protected areas, the demand for water and food, and the competing biomass demands for power generation and other transportation fuels.
In response, WWF-South Africa, IIASA and RSB conducted a study as part of the landscape-level programme project, ‘Fuelling the Sustainable Bioeconomy’, which was led by RSB and powered by The Boeing Company’s charitable foundation. The study was conducted using FAO/IIASA agro-ecological zone models, and the most recently available spatial environmental data and feedstock requirement information, to provide a realistic upper estimate of South America’s current and future sustainable aviation fuel potential under strict sustainability criteria.
The sustainability constraints were based on RSB’s Principles & Criteria and included the requirement for biofuels to significantly reduce GHG emissions over a full lifecycle assessment. We warmly invite you to participate in this valuable presentation and discuss how we can promote the development of sustainable aviation fuels in South America.
