GranBio achieves RSB certificate for its cellulosic ethanol in Europe

Bioflex Agroindustrial has achieved an internationally recognised certification from the Roundtable on Sustainable Biomaterials (RSB), a global standard for biofuels and other bio-based and circular fuels and materials. Part of GranBio, a Brazilian biotechnology company and pioneer in the production of cellulosic ethanol in the Southern Hemisphere, Bioflex Agroindustrial’s certificate demonstrates compliance with both RSB’s robust sustainability requirements and the regulatory requirements of RED (EU sustainability criteria and traceability requirements for biofuels and bioliquids). The certificate demonstrates that the 2G ethanol biofuel produced by the company has an extremely low carbon footprint, reaching an emission note of only 8.2g CO2eq/MJ, which represents an emission 91% lower than its fossil equivalent (gasoline).

With that, the company is ready to export its cellulosic ethanol to European countries. “Granbio advances in its mission to contribute to the global energy transition to a low carbon economy”, explains Bernardo Gradin, GranBio’s CEO. Currently, the company has a plant dedicated to second generation ethanol, installed in São Miguel dos Campos, in Alagoas, with a production capacity of 30 million liters of biofuel per year.

Congratulating GranBio on their achievement of an RSB certificate, Rolf Hogan, RSB’s Executive Director, had this to say, “Achieving RSB certification is a major achievement for GranBio — going beyond the ‘basics’ of regulatory compliance to demonstrate the highest levels of social and environmental sustainability with RSB proves that they are real leaders in driving the global energy transition. As a pioneer in Brazil and Latin America, we expect the leadership of GranBio to encourage further uptake of RSB certification – driving better social and environmental practices, promoting the use of residues and preventing deforestation, food insecurity and other negative impacts. I am very pleased to congratulate GranBio on their certification.”

About RSB certification

The Roundtable on Sustainable Biomaterials (RSB) is an international, multi-stakeholder, independent organisation that supports the development of the global bioeconomy through sustainability solutions, certification, innovation and collaborative partnerships.

With credible solutions, global expertise, partners across the spectrum from government to industry and NGOs, and an extremely robust approach to sustainability, RSB is the partner of choice for the bioeconomy as it seeks to combat climate change while also ensuring social development and environmental protection.

About GranBio

Founded in 2011, GranBio is a 100% Brazilian industrial biotechnology company, controlled by GranInvestimentos S.A., which creates solutions to transform lignocellulosic biomass into renewable and sustainable products. A pioneer in the production of Cellulosic Ethanol, or second generation (2G), in the Southern Hemisphere, the company is the only one in the sector that operates from the beginning to the end of the production chain – from raw material to the distribution of the final product – integrating its own and partners technologies. With investments focused on the renewables industry, it also operates in the development and production of nanocellulose and biochemicals, in addition to the development of sugarcane varieties with high productivity and tolerance to restrictive environments.
