RSB Low ILUC Risk Biomass Module

To minimise the risk of indirect land-use change (ILUC), RSB has developed a set of criteria and compliance indicators for operators to voluntarily demonstrate that their operations are unlikely to cause any displacement of an equivalent biomass production to another location.

The RSB Low ILUC Risk Biomass Module is a voluntary addition to other RSB certification schemes that enables operators to make  additional claims that an RSB feedstock or product is at minimal risk of causing indirect land use change.

NB: The RSB Low ILUC Biomass Module may not be used as a standalone certification.

Certification context

Being certified against RSB’s Low ILUC Risk Module allows operators to make use of low ILUC risk biomass claims and labels to demonstrate to their investors, buyers and civil society stakeholders that the GHG emission reductions are real and there is a low ILUC risk.

RSB’s voluntary module recognises three approaches:

  • Yield increase
  • Unused/degraded land
  • Use of waste/residues

Working with the RSB Principles & Criteria

When it comes to working with RSB’s sustainability framework, not every document applies to every producer. By completing the self-risk assessment and screening exercises before the certification process, your context-specific sustainability requirements will be set out.

Depending on your certification scope and the type of operator you are, you will only need to work with some of these documents. The specific sustainability requirements that apply to your operation will be clarified when you complete your screening exercise.
