RSB Recognised by European Commission for RFNBO & RCF Certification under RED III
.
The Roundtable on Sustainable Biomaterials (RSB) has received a positive technical assessment from the European Commission for its new certification standard covering Renewable Fuels of Non-Biological Origin (RFNBOs) and Recycled Carbon Fuels (RCFs) under the EU Renewable Energy Directive (RED III).
This positive technical assessment confirms that the RSB EU RFNBO and RCF Standard (RSB-STD-11-103 v.1.0) meets the compliance, traceability, and sustainability requirements of RED III. It reinforces RSB’s position as a trusted sustainability partner supporting the transition to a net-positive bio-based and circular economy.
RSB-accredited Certification Bodies can now certify RFNBOs and RCFs under the RSB system, enabling fuel producers and market actors to demonstrate RED III compliance and contribute to the decarbonisation of hard-to-abate sectors, including aviation, maritime transport, and chemicals.

About the Standards
.
The scope of the recognised standard includes:
- Renewable fuels of non-biological origin (RFNBOs): Liquid and gaseous fuels, other than biofuels, the energy content of which is derived from renewable sources.
- Recycled carbon fuels (RCFs): Liquid and gaseous fuels derived from non-renewable waste streams, including waste processing gases and exhaust gases of non-renewable origin.
To support RFNBO certification under the revised standard, RSB’s GHG Calculator Tool delivers full life cycle emissions calculations using the latest data. Learn more about updates to the GHG Calculator Tools, including new pathways for co-processing, flexible allocation, RCFs, and RFNBOs, on our website.
The standard is now publicly available here. For certification inquiries, please contact [email protected].
