RSB and DHL Global Forwarding: Scaling Credible Book and Claim for Freight

The Roundtable on Sustainable Biomaterials (RSB) and DHL Global Forwarding (DGF) have launched a strategic pilot project to test, evolve and scale the RSB Book & Claim System for freight transport, spanning both maritime and aviation sectors.

This initiative is a strategic step in the further development of the RSB Book & Claim System, by adapting it to the needs of a leading logistics service provider. It enables DGF’s customers to make traceable and verifiable claims regarding the use of low-emission fuels – now backed by the automated functionality of the RSB Registry and the system’s multi-stakeholder governance.

“This pilot is a key step toward enabling credible climate action for freight customers,” said Max Eichelbaum, RSB’s Associate Director of Digital Solutions and Book & Claim. “By combining DHL’s logistics expertise with RSB’s verified sustainability framework, we are developing a transparent and auditable Book & Claim solution. This system supports measurable emissions reductions and is built on consensus-driven standards from RSB’s global community and is part of our mission to advance the just transition to a sustainable bioeconomy.”

What is book and claim?

Freight transport, including ocean and air cargo, contributes significantly to global GHG emissions. DGF, as part of its Science-Based Targets initiative (SBTi) commitments, is working to reduce emissions across all scopes, including customer-related Scope 3 emissions from logistics operations. However, limited access and distribution of  low-emission fuels pose a challenge for widespread decarbonisation.

That’s where Book & Claim comes in: a trusted, auditable system that decouples the  emission attributes of fuels from their physical movement, allowing companies like DHL to offer low-emission solutions to customers, while supporting global fuel development and supply.

RSB’s approach ensures this is done with robust sustainability standards, third-party assurance, and multi-stakeholder oversight, avoiding double counting and enabling claims that are both transparent and traceable.

Pilot overview

The pilot is designed to adapt and refine the RSB Book & Claim System for freight logistics, ensuring it builds on what is already possible, and meets the practical and reporting needs of DGF and its customers.

This work will focus on:

  • Demonstrating how Book & Claim can be applied consistently across both maritime and aviation freight.
  • Developing approaches to make emissions reduction reporting clear, reliable, and customer-ready.
  • Testing how the RSB Registry can support multi-customer allocation in a simple, transparent, and credible way.

Future phases will further develop these findings to ensure that the trusted book and claim process is seamlessly backed by an automated registry solution, strengthening both integrity and ease of use for logisticsapplications.

“Clear and rigorous book and claim systems are imperative to scale up decarbonization in the maritime and air transport sectors in a transparent, credible and sustainable way. Registries will play a central role in backing up these systems and making carbon reduction claims even more traceable, unlocking the next level of verifiability and digitalisation. Combining the long-standing experience of RSB and DGF, we are adding an essential building block to this landscape, paving the way for a wide-scale and interconnected decarbonization pathway for these hard-to-abate sectors.” – Kathrin Brost, VP Global Head of GoGreen Program at DHL Global Forwarding.

What’s next?

This pilot is an essential step toward a scalable, trusted system that empowers freight customers to make credible climate claims. By aligning rigorous sustainability standards with logistics operations, DHL and RSB are working to drive a new era of credible emissions reductions for freight customers worldwide.
