RSB joins Plastic Reboot Programme with GEF, WWF and UN agencies to drive credible alternatives to plastic pollution

.

This Earth Day, RSB is proud to announce its role as an executing partner in the newly launched Plastic Reboot Programme – an ambitious initiative supported by the Global Environment Facility (GEF), co-led by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), and delivered in partnership with UNDP and UNIDO.

The Plastic Reboot Programme sets out to address plastic pollution at its source by advancing upstream and midstream circular solutions – especially in the food and beverage sector. It is being delivered through one Global Project and a suite of 15 national projects, working with governments, civil society, and the private sector to rethink how materials are designed, sourced, and reused.

As an executing partner, RSB brings nearly two decades of leadership in sustainable systems and bio-based innovation to the programme. Our role focuses on building the sustainability foundations for plastic alternatives—ensuring that the solutions to plastic pollution are not only innovative but also socially just, locally relevant, and environmentally sound.

RSB is applying its globally recognised sustainability framework to define what credible plastic alternatives look like, benchmarking existing standards and identifying gaps, and co-developing practical guidance and tools with actors across the 15 national projects – drawing on the diverse insights of RSB’s multi-stakeholder community. Through the RSB Academy, we are also delivering targeted training and capacity building to support the implementation of circular solutions at scale.

.

“Plastic Reboot is a critical milestone to bring a sustainable bioeconomy to scale, and RSB is proud to help guide that transformation by embedding credible sustainability criteria into plastic alternative developments through globally recognised standards, expert knowledge exchange, and tools that turn best practice into impact.” – Elena Schmidt, Executive Director, RSB

.

RSB’s work in the Plastic Reboot Programme will deliver a range of key outputs, including:

  • A step-by-step guide for assessing the sustainability of plastic alternatives
  • Reports identifying knowledge gaps such as feedstock availability and local actor needs
  • Support for the uptake of sustainability guidance across national projects and industry
  • Capacity building and actor engagement to ensure guidance is applied effectively across diverse settings

Recognised by UNEP, WWF, and the Bioplastics Feedstock Alliance for our robust sustainability criteria, RSB is uniquely positioned to guide the development of credible, science-based solutions in the fast-evolving plastic alternatives space. Through the Plastic Reboot Programme, we are helping build the systems, policies, and skills required to scale truly sustainable materials and ensure a world free from plastic pollution.

RSB invites individuals and organisations working on plastic alternatives to contribute to this work through consultations, expert interviews, and knowledge-sharing activities.
