RSB marks first approved Book & Claim Unit registration with SkyNRG’s co-processed SAF

.

RSB is incredibly excited to mark the first approved Book & Claim Unit (BCU) registration for a co-processed batch of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) by SkyNRG. This development reinforces the credibility and scalability of RSB’s approach to book and claim as a chain-of-custody solution to decarbonising hard-to-abate sectors like aviation, supporting the wider adoption of sustainable fuels.

Sustainable fuels are the single biggest opportunity today to decarbonise carbon-intensive sectors, such as aviation and shipping. But the investments needed to develop the necessary technologies, production and supply chains are such that these fuels are only available at limited geographical locations, and at a cost that is still significantly higher than fossil fuels.

Book and claim offers a solution.

When sustainable fuels, materials and products move along the supply chain, their attributes – including the sustainability benefits – are tracked, documented and verified via a ‘chain of custody’. As a chain-of-custody model, book and claim provides a market mechanism in which one customer can ‘book’ sustainable fuel and another can ‘claim’ the sustainability benefits. While the claimant may not technically fly or ship their goods on sustainable fuel, their purchase demonstrates market confidence and supports the growth of the market, and they can claim the benefits towards their sustainability targets.

When it comes to book and claim, RSB’s focus is on providing a robust framework for ensuring the credibility of sustainability claims. Through the RSB Book & Claim Registry, sustainability attributes are securely transferred via verified BCUs, ensuring traceability and integrity in the market, and reducing the risk associated with double counting.

With over 120 retirement statements already issued through the registry in 2024, the first approved BCU registration for a co-processed SAF batch – courtesy of industry leader, SkyNRG – further cements the role of book and claim as a credible solution for accelerating decarbonisation across hard-to-abate sectors like aviation.

Co-processing is an innovative refining technique that integrates renewable inputs into existing fossil refinery infrastructure, producing co-processed fuels by blending bio-based feedstocks with fossil fuel-based feedstocks. This way, producers can leverage existing infrastructure to scale sustainable fuels like SAF without the need for entirely new facilities. Read more news about co-processing here.

However, since co-processed SAF becomes physically mixed with fossil fuels, it is difficult to track and allocate sustainability attributes to specific end-users.

This is where book and claim plays a vital role.

Book and claim ensures that the sustainability benefits of co-processed SAF are accurately accounted for and attributed to the correct customers, regardless of the physical fuel’s final destination.

Thanks to SkyNRG’s leadership, this first approved BCU registration for a co-processed SAF represents a significant step forward for book and claim as a chain-of-study solution model, the RSB Registry as a key vehicle for ensuring this solution’s credibility, and the production of co-processed fuels as a cost-effective and transitionary pathway to the scaling of sustainable fuels.

Looking ahead, SkyNRG and RSB see book and claim continuing to play a crucial role in connecting sustainable fuel supply with market demand and will continue to strengthen their partnership, collaborating on the development of the RSB Book & Claim System and supporting the expansion of credible sustainability claims across diverse fuel pathways.

“This first approved BCU registration is a testament to both the credibility of book and claim and the strength of RSB’s decade-old partnership with SkyNRG. Together, we’re demonstrating how book and claim can scale the use of co-processed SAF with integrity, and by leveraging RSB’s trusted Book & Claim Registry, we’re enabling greater transparency, credibility, and market access for sustainable fuels.”Max Eichelbaum, RSB Associate Director – Digital Solutions and Book & Claim

“We’re pleased to mark this significant milestone with RSB. We share a longstanding partnership dating back to 2013 when we got RSB EU RED certified as an operator. More recently, in 2021, we received the RSB CORSIA certification. We’re looking forward to this next phase of partnership as we continue advancing sustainability in the aviation industry.” Theye Veen, Co-founder and CCO, SkyNRG
