RSB publishes new White Paper on decarbonising the maritime sector

RSB has published a new White Paper on decarbonising the maritime sector – an outcome of the RSB Sustainable Marine Fuel Platform.

The need to support decarbonisation in the maritime sector is absolutely clear. According to the International Maritime Organization (IMO), the maritime sector is responsible for about 2.5% of global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. However, this figure is projected to increase significantly in the coming decades as global trade and shipping volumes continue to grow. Some estimates suggest that without additional measures to reduce emissions, the maritime sector could be responsible for up to 17% of global GHG emissions by 2050.

Sustainable marine fuels (SMF) – low-carbon fuel alternatives for the maritime industry – will play an important role in achieving decarbonisation targets. To ensure that SMF are produced and used in a consistent, just and sustainable manner, it will be vital that relevant stakeholders come together to understand what lessons can be learnt from other sectors and from each other.

In response, RSB has published a new White Paper on decarbonising the maritime sector, in collaboration with its RSB Sustainable Marine Fuel Platform members. Starting with a comprehensive definition of “SMF”, the publication looks to unpack the sustainability criteria that are required to put the ‘S’ in SMF given today’s evolving regulatory environment, before looking at what is next for SMF with a particular focus on the role of book and claim and co-processing in the maritime sector.
