RSB EU RED Certification Scheme Recognised under the UK’s Renewable Transport Fuel Obligation (RTFO)
.
The Roundtable on Sustainable Biomaterials (RSB) is pleased to announce that its RSB EU RED certification scheme has been formally recognised under the UK’s Renewable Transport Fuel Obligation (RTFO).
Operators can now use their RSB EU RED certification to demonstrate compliance with the RTFO’s sustainability and greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction criteria. This enables RSB EU RED certified operators supplying renewable fuels to the UK market to benefit from streamlined compliance processes while maintaining the highest environmental and social responsibility standards.
Beyond regulatory compliance, this milestone positions RSB EU RED’s certified operators to access the UK renewable fuels market while supporting the UK’s efforts to decarbonize transport and meet ambitious climate targets, with the same rigour, transparency and credibility that define RSB’s globally recognised certification systems.
.
Scope of Recognition
.
The UK Department recognises RSB EU RED certificates for Transport as valid evidence of compliance under the RTFO for:
- GHG performance (actual or default values)
- Biofuels and biomethane
- Multi-feedstock applications
- Global supply chains
- Chain of Custody and Land Criteria
This allows RSB EU RED certified operators to submit their Proof of Sustainability (POS) documents directly to the RTFO Operating System (ROS) to demonstrate compliance.

Built for Trust: A Certification System that goes further
.
In a landscape where sustainability claims are under growing scrutiny, credibility matters more than ever. RSB’s certification system is designed for accountability, not convenience. It is built on reasonable assurance, independent oversight and full transparency.
Unlike limited assurance models relying on surface-level checks, RSB applies reasonable assurance auditing. This means auditors must verify source data, evaluate internal controls, and gather sufficient evidence to ensure that sustainability claims are not just assumed, but demonstrably accurate.
The system also includes a third-party technical oversight body, public stakeholder consultations and transparent audit summaries publication. These elements work together to ensure that trust in the RSB label is not just expected but earned. RSB’s approach reflects a core belief: transparency is not a risk. It is a requirement for trust.

About the RTFO
.
Launched in 2008, the UK’s Renewable Transport Fuel Obligation (RTFO) is a central government policy to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from transport. It requires fuel-suppliers to meet annual renewable fuel obligations, supported by evidence of sustainability. The Department for Transport officially recognizes voluntary schemes such as RSB EU RED as credible mechanisms for demonstrating renewable fuels compliance.
About RSB
.
The Roundtable on Sustainable Biomaterials (RSB) is a global collaborative network driving the just transition to a net-positive world. Its sustainability framework-built through a unique multi-stakeholder governance model – is recognised as the most credible and rigorous standard for sustainable production and use of bio-based and circular materials and fuels.
Through certification, advisory services, and strategic programmes, RSB enables industry, governments and innovators to deliver meaningful sustainability outcomes and ensure positive impacts for climate, ecosystems, and communities.
RSB’s work is grounded in the RSB Principles & Criteria, recognised by leading regulatory frameworks including the EU Renewable Energy Directive (EU RED), ICAO CORSIA, and now, the UK RTFO.
