SAF now! RSB, Alaska Airlines, Microsoft launch tools to demystify SAF and support airlines, corporates to choose sustainable solutions

6 December 2023 | Dubai, UAE – At the 28th Conference of the Parties (COP28), the Roundtable on Sustainable Biomaterials (RSB), in partnership with Alaska Airlines and Microsoft, announced the official launch of SAF-now.org – a microsite resource designed to empower key decision-makers with information on topics most relevant to choosing sustainable aviation fuel (SAF).

The launch of SAF-now.org comes at a critical time in the global pursuit of net zero, as COP28 marks the halfway point between the 2015 Paris Agreement and the crucial deadline of 2030, when global emissions need to be halved to align with the ambitious 1.5°C target. As airlines and organisations around the world seek to play their part, a key solution is the use of drop-in alternative fuels known as SAF.

However, it is essential that SAF brings about real benefits to people and planet. As such, it has become imperative that decision makers looking to reduce emissions are empowered to choose truly sustainable SAF, while also ensuring that people and goods can continue to move around the world.

SAF-now.org has been developed by RSB, a long-term and trusted partner of the aviation sector, and powered by Alaska Airlines and Microsoft, to support individuals across airlines and corporates to make the switch to SAF. The microsite’s resources cover the basics of SAF; (‘What is it?’); the raw materials used (‘Where does SAF come from and how?’); innovative Power-to-X technologies (‘How can we turn renewable energy, water and renewable carbon sources into fossil-free SAF?’); and the tools to unlock SAF availability (‘How can a chain-of-custody approach ensure that supply meets global demand?’).

I am thrilled to finally unveil SAF-now.org at COP28, which has been a collaborative passion project between RSB, Alaska Airlines and Microsoft. Partnership is key to driving positive change, and this project exemplifies our collective dedication to advancing sustainable decarbonisation in the aviation sector. SAF-now.org serves as a valuable resource for anyone seeking to deepen their understanding of sustainable aviation fuel and its role in delivering climate action, and I am so proud that we can now share this work to key decision-makers and the wider public, for free.” – Elena Schmidt, RSB Executive Director.

If you are looking to accelerate your organisation’s decarbonisation goals, the videos and factsheets on SAF-now.org are now publicly available for anyone to explore. Following the launch of the information portal at COP28, a webinar series of specially-curated learning sessions will also be launched in 2024, which will provide further value-added information and insight to leverage the SAF opportunity and achieve your decarbonisation goals.
