RSB joins the global Science-Based Targets Network to advance measurable, climate-positive action

RSB has joined the Science Based Targets Network (SBTN) Corporate Engagement Program to help advance corporate action on science-based targets for climate. Bringing expertise grounded in our best-in-class sustainability Standard, RSB will work with SBTN to develop and advance the uptake of science-based targets for companies to meet their climate goals.
RSB’s approach to sustainability for the bio-based and circular economy is holistic, practical and credible – having been developed by a multi-stakeholder grouping of NGOs, business, academia and others to represent best practice for environmental and social sustainability, and greenhouse gas emission reductions. Translating this approach into action, via a certification system for the whole value chain that focuses on three clear approaches to overall sustainability, via climate mitigation, fossil resource reduction and sustainable production, enables companies around the world to better understand their impacts, link these to their goals, and clearly articulate the positive impacts created by their products to customers and consumers.

Science-based targets provide a clearly-defined pathway for companies to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, helping prevent the worst impacts of climate change and future-proof business growth. By aligning climate goals with the latest environmental science, setting science-based targets brings credibility and accountability to corporate sustainability initiatives.
“Transitioning to a sustainable bio-based and circular economy will be essential to halving the Earth’s greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 and reaching net zero by 2050,” says Rolf Hogan, RSB’s Executive Director. “Engaging with the SBTN Corporate Engagement Program to help companies reach their targets on climate mitigation, as well as social and environmental sustainability, is a fantastic way for RSB to ensure that our best-in-class standard is able to have maximum impact where it really matters.”
By engaging with SBTN, RSB will give strategic insight on how to use credible certification to achieve science-based targets, provide feedback into the design of methods and tools and participate in a community of committed organisations to advance the overall adoption of concrete targets for climate action.
With 94% of SBTi companies setting scope 3 science based targets in 2020, RSB’s expertise and insight built from years of engagement across value chains in the chemicals and polymers, textiles, aviation, shipping and ground transport sectors will enable companies to achieve real and measurable impact across their value chains.
