Launch of Ethiopia’s SAF Roadmap in Addis Ababa

Last week (February 24th) in Addis Ababa, RSB hosted stakeholders from government, private sector and civil society to launch the roadmap for developing Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) in Ethiopia.

Dr. Yitebitu Moges, Ethiopia’s REDD+ Programme Coordinator, delivered a keynote address on carbon offsetting schemes and the potential of the aviation sector in the Ethiopian context.

Retta Melaku, the Chief Operating Officer of the Ethiopian Airlines, began the event by reiterating the airline’s commitment to international climate goals and the development of SAF in Ethiopia.

Gosaye Mengistie, Advisor to the Minister of Water and Energy, highlighted the government’s new policy towards transitioning to renewable energy, and specifically its efforts to identify investments in hydroelectric, wind, solar, biomass and geothermal resources.

Remarks were also made by Sean Newsum, Director of Environmental Strategy at Boeing, who spoke about devising technologies to mitigate carbon emissions, and Shiferaw Nora from the Ethiopian Civil Aviation Authority, who reflected on the national regulatory frameworks that are needed to meet the aviation sector’s climate goals.
