Government & NGO partnerships

Assisting governments, NGOs and others to develop policies and implement projects in line with our world-class sustainability Standard.

With our extensive network of stakeholders from across the industry, NGOs and UN organisations, the RSB is well placed to assist with the development of policy as well as the implementation of projects and operations at local, regional and national level.

Working through partnerships we use our technical and strategic expertise to assist organisations and governments to incorporate the principles of our world-class sustainability Standard into projects of all kinds. Projects that work with biomaterials can also benefit from RSB’s support through capacity-building and technical support, helping to ensure their long-term sustainability.

Regional Assessments of biomass availability

We work with partner organisations to carry out assessments of the amount of sustainable biomass that can be produced in a given area. Our Sustainable Biomass Framework allows for the development of future scenarios that take account of likely impacts of climate change and human development.

Policy & Regulation Support

We help you understand the global sustainability principles of the Standard and how they can be applied for policy and regulation in a national or regional context.

Adapting to the national context

We work with governments, business, NGOs and academics to adapt the RSB standard to national, or regional conditions. We have developed RSB indicators for the USA and work is ongoing in Mexico, South Africa and Queensland with stakeholders to develop indicators that are adapted to the national context and facilitate implementation of the RSB Standard.

Capacity Building

We train extension workers, NGO staff and consultants in the RSB Standard and sustainability principles via workshops, or remote training.

6. Smallholder Support

We work with agricultural extension organisations and NGOs to build the capacity of smallholder farmers and help them prepare for RSB certification – using our specific Smallholder Standard which facilitates certification for groups of small farmers.

Our Work In Action

Through our partnerships with NGOs, governments and other policy groups, the RSB Standard and RSB technical advice has informed and developed policies worldwide. Here are some examples of our work together in action:

  • Partnerships
    • We are working with a range of stakeholders in Brazil & South Africa to build sustainable supply chains for aviation biofuels.
  • Regional Assessments of biomass availability
    • We have worked with WWF South Africa to assess the long-term availability of biomass in sub-Saharan Africa using a model that allows for the likely impacts of climate change and human development.
  • Policy & Regulation Support
    • Biofuel policies in Mexico and Mozambique have used the RSB standard to ensure sustainable biofuel production at national level.
    • In New South Wales RSB certification is a requirement for all biofuels.
  • Adapting to the national context
    • We have developed RSB indicators specifically for the USA
    • We are working in Mexico, South Africa and Queensland with stakeholders to develop indicators that are adapted to the national context and facilitate implementation of the RSB Standard.
  • Smallholder Support
    • We have worked with smallholder farmers in Brazil, South Africa, and Sri Lanka to build their capacity on sustainable practices and prepare them for RSB certification so that they can access new markets.

Case Study

RSB Working With Others to Make a Difference in South Africa

On Boeing’s 100th anniversary, South African Airways (SAA) celebrated Africa’s first sustainable biofuel flight. The flight from Johannesburg to Cape Town, operated by a Boeing 737-800, used biojet fuel produced from Sunchem’s nicotine-free tobacco plant Solaris, refined by AltAir Fuels, and supplied by SkyNRG. Sunchem and SkyNRG are both RSB certified, and AltAir is in the process of RSB certification.
