RSB EU RED Fuel Certification

This certification has been designed for fuel producers, traders, processors and transporters working within, or trading with, the European Union. It is recognised by the European Commission to prove compliance with the requirements of the EU Renewable Energy Directive (RED), as well as with the RSB’s stringent sustainability principles.

RSB is currently in the process of being recognised under the recast requirements of RED II.

The RSB EU RED Fuel Certification enables the certification of:

  • Primary biomass (e.g. oil or sugar crops crops)
  • Biomass from end-of-life products and production residues (e.g. Used Cooking Oil, agricultural residues, animal fats)

Example Claims

  • RSB EU RED Compliant Biomass
  • RSB EU RED Compliant Biofuels
  • RSB EU RED Compliant Biomass

*“EU RED compliant” claims are also allowed, when the supply chain includes feedstock certified by other EU RED Voluntary schemes.

  • RSB EU RED Compliant Biofuels

Over its production lifecycle, this biofuel provides [x] % greenhouse gas savings compared to a fossil fuel equivalent.

*“EU RED compliant” claims are also allowed, when the supply chain includes feedstock certified by other EU RED Voluntary schemes.

Get Certified

In order to ensure that fuel production can demonstrate real greenhouse gas emission reductions while not contributing to issues like deforestation, global hunger, ecological breakdown and more, the RSB has developed the most robust and credible standard for the production of fuels anywhere in the world.

RSB’s EU RED Fuel Certification describes how to produce biofuels in a way that enhances long-term environmental and social outcomes and to guarantee compliance with the EU sustainability criteria and traceability requirements for biofuels and bioliquids.

RSB’s EU RED Fuel Certification is composed of a variety of procedures and methodologies that describe how to produce, trade and use bio-based fuels.

RSB’s approach to sustainability is anchored in our 12 Principles for the sustainable production of fuels and products.

Working With the RSB Standard

Risk-based approach: not every requirement applies to every producer and by completing the self-risk assessment and screening exercise during the certification process, your context-specific sustainability requirements will be set out.

Which documents apply to me?

Depending on your certification scope and the type of operator you are, you will only need to work with some of these documents. The specific sustainability requirements that apply to your operation will be clarified when you complete your Screening Exercise.
