Agenda update: RSB Annual Conference 2022

This year’s RSB Annual Conference, in partnership with Gevo and The Boeing Company, is less than a month away!

Each day will have a different emphasis, based on RSB’s theory of how change works.

  • Day 1 – INNOVATE – looking at the vision, energy and activism required to affect meaningful and sustainable change.
  • Day 2 – BUILD – this is where we start creating the conditions for collaboration.
  • Day 3 – SCALE – evolving our mindsets so critical mass can be achieved and enabling environments can be established.

See below for the RSB Annual Conference’s agenda (subject to change):

The world we’re in: And the promise of the bioeconomy
We know that the bioeconomy offers huge potential to tackle the climate crisis, but what is holding us back? In this session, we review what it means to “innovate” towards a circular bioeconomy – identifying the challenges that stifle progress, and the opportunities that RSB and its membership community are exploring to overcome these barriers.

17:00 – 18:00 CET
Magic ingredients:
Making emerging tech work for people and planet
RSB’s collaborative network is driving innovation and creating new solutions to the planet’s most pressing challenges. In this session, sponsored by Airbus, we invite experts to look at the mix of ingredients needed to take emerging tech to adopted global practice in a way that benefits both people and the planet.

18:00 – 19:00 CET
Funding futures:
How financing can advance the bioeconomy
Finance is needed to develop the R&D, technologies and projects that will bring us into a low carbon future. In this session, we learn from those that have successfully directed funding towards supporting decarbonisation, and ensuring broader positive social and environmental outcomes – as well as what RSB’s supporting role is.

Tuesday, 30th  November 2022BUILD

14:30 – 15:00 CET
Keynote
Suzanne Simard (Author and Professor of Forest Ecology

15:00 – 15:15 CET

Horizon Europe: Advancing sustainability in diverse projects
Horizon Europe is the EU’s key funding programme for research and innovation – tackling climate change and helping to achieve the SDGs. In this session, we review the challenges and opportunities from RSB’s multi-project contribution, and look at the importance of building partnerships of knowledge-exchange within the EU.

16:45 – 17:45 CET
Power to PtX : Building towards sustainable scale
Power-to-X (PtX: power-to-liquid, power-to-gas, power-to-ammonia) technology holds promise as a renewable, non-biogenic approach to producing fuels. In this session, sponsored by Sasol, we’ll build on the progress that the RSB membership platform has made in guiding discussions on PtX, and collaborate on future plans of the platform.

18:00 – 19:00 CET
Full circle for plastics: The biomaterial revival
Plastics play a central role in our lives, but the switch to sustainable alternatives to fossil-based feedstocks is imperative. In this session, sponsored by Neste, we learn about the value of bioplastics, how to overcome the barriers to building the biomaterial industry, and discuss how to accelerate the shift away from virgin fossil material.

Wednesday, 31st  November 2022SCALE

Critical mass: What an Impact Alliance looks like in practice
RSB seeks to form Impact Alliances of diverse global stakeholders to bring about systematic and meaningful change. 16:45 – 17:45 CET
Scaling impact: The sustainable future of Brazil’s aerospace industry
The aviation industry has committed to net-zero carbon emissions by 2050, and Brazil is well-positioned to lead the expansion of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) production. In this session, sponsored by Boeing, we’ll discuss Brazil’s potential, and showcase how RSB and Boeing’s partnership in the region offers a model that can be replicated globally.

18:00 – 19:00 CET
Book and claim: Where to next?
‘Book and claim’ is a chain of custody model that can support the scaling of sustainable fuels and reduce the climate impact of hard-to-abate sectors. In this session, sponsored by World Energy, we will showcase the learnings from RSB’s Book & Claim System pilots in the aviation sector, and understand how they can be applied to the shipping sector.
