RSB Secretariat

The RSB Secretariat is responsible for the day-to-day running of the RSB. It ensures the ongoing development of the RSB Standard as well as its promotion and implementation through certification and policy. The Secretariat’s annual workplan is available online.

The RSBs main office is located in Geneva Switzerland with staff also located in Brazil and the United States of America (see below).

Rolf Hogan – Executive Secretary


Rolf leads the work of the RSB Secretariat on behalf of the RSB Board of Directors. He ensures effective strategies, partnerships and finances are in place to fulfill the RSB mission.  With an academic background in both natural and social sciences, Rolf has 20 years’ experience with the non-profit sector and global environmental policy. He represented WWF at the Convention on Biological Diversity and led the Protected Areas for a Living Planet – an ambitious program to enhance protected areas systems across 25 countries. Rolf also worked with the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) on the evaluation and monitoring of natural areas included on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Business Development

Matthew Rudolf – Business Development & Americas Director

Matt RudolfMatt leads RSB’s business development team and promotes RSB certification in North and Central America. He has 10 years experience working in biomaterials, sustainability and international development. His work takes him to the far reaches of the globe, where he works with agricultural and industrial bioenergy and biomaterial producers to promote their efforts for better social and environmental performance. Prior to RSB, Matt was Executive Director of Piedmont Biofuels Inc. Matt is a frequent author and conference speaker on bioenergy sustainability. Matt earned a BA in Psychology from the University of Massachusetts.

Melanie Williams, PhD – Regional Director, Europe, Middle East and Africa


Melanie leads RSB certification activities in the EU, Middle East and Africa and assists biomaterials producers and refiners with their applications for RSB certification. Melanie also advises RSB Participating Operators on European biofuel regulation and how it can affect their certification, and is a contact point for the European Commission. She previously worked at SERCO leading the Environmental Measurements Group at the National Physical Laboratory (NPL) in the UK. Her work also encompassed research into new methods for measuring emissions of greenhouse gases from the agricultural, waste management, petrochemical and power sectors. Melanie earned a MA in Natural Sciences and a Ph.D. from the University of Cambridge and is a frequent speaker in Europe.

Aurea Nardelli, PhD – Regional Director, South America

Aurea Nardelli 2Aurea is using her 20 years of experience related to sustainability, environment and climate change to expand RSB’s outreach in Brazil and other South American countries and to assist biomaterials entities pursuing RSB certification.  She has extensive experience related to sustainability standards and certification systems in the context of forestry and agriculture value chains in South America. In her past roles as a forestry engineer, independent lead auditor for SGS, consultant at ProForest and other organizations, and graduate professor, she led dialogues with diverse stakeholders. Aurea earned a Doctorate in Forestry Science from Universidade Federal de Viçosa in Minas Gerais, Brazil. Aurea is a frequent author, speaker, and graduate course professor.

Standards Development

Sébastien Haye – Standards Development Director


Sébastien leads the standards development team and coordinates the development and update of sustainability standards in partnership with more than 100 members from all sectors. Prior to the RSB, Sebastien worked for the Resource Optimisation Initiative (Bangalore, India). He volunteers for Terre des Hommes Suisse as a project advisor and for Artjuna as board member. Sébastien holds a BSc in Biology and MSc in Environmental Sciences (lifecycle analysis, ecotoxicology and risk analysis) from the University of Geneva.

Anne Uyeda – Standards Manager

Anne-Uyeda-Photo for web smallAnne supports Standard Development activities within RSB and gathers experience on implementation of the standard through certification for improving the standard. She is responsible for overall development and management of the Monitoring & Evaluation system. Anne graduated from Virginia Commonwealth University with a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Studies, and a Biology minor. Above all, Anne hopes to see sustainable business practice become a global priority.

Helena Tavares Kennedy – Marketing & Communications Director

helena photo for websiteHelena utilizes her 15 years of experience to lead RSB’s marketing and communications activities, including branding, media relations, content management, events, website, and social media. She is dedicated to improving sustainability and getting the word out so all can work together to achieve a better world. Helena earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in International Relations with a Concentration in Environmental Policy from Mount Holyoke College and Masters of Business Administration from University of Maryland University College.

Smallholder Programme

Ethan Spaner – Coordinator, Smallholder Programme

Ethan SpanerEthan coordinates RSB’s smallholder programme, where he ensures effective delivery of training and certifications to achieve sustainability and improve the livelihoods of smallholder farmers. He has worked on renewable energy and climate change issues for over 4 years, including sustainability standards, land use and deforestation, and international cooperation under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. He holds a BA in History from Wake Forest University and JD in International Environmental Law from Pace University School of Law.

Reet Sarnik – Intern (Administration and Communications)

Reet SarnikReet Sarnik joins RSB as a full time intern where she ensures efficient functioning of the administrative part of RSB, events’ organization and supports the communication activities. She has worked in waste treatment and renewable energy field in different countries and been engaged in research projects for sustainable development. She is an active member of several environmental NGOs. She holds a MSc in Environmental Sciences (waste treatment) from University of Tartu.
